New Medford homeless Veteran shelter approved

Shelter Approved

MEDFORD, Ore. -- A Medford man says there's not enough being done for homeless Veterans in the Rogue Valley. Clay Ver Bryck is taking matters into his own hands.

The Site Plan and Architectural Commission unanimously approved the project Ver Bryck has been working on for nearly ten years.

A Veteran himself, Ver Bryck knows first-hand the struggles they face overseas and when they get back home. For years, he's been planning to build a shelter to house homeless Veterans.

The shelter will sit on a property at 3602 N. Pacific Highway. It will house 30 Veterans, ten women and 20 men. It won't just be a place for them to live.

"They have to really want to be helped, if they're just looking for a place to get off the street and they want to stay on the street, I can't help them," Ver Bryck said.

Veterans staying in the facility will have access to medical, mental health and disability resources. Even the building will be therapeutic. Veterans will live boot camp, barrack style with plenty of open space.

Ver Bryck said that's for a reason. It will be something they are used to and will help give them feel how they did when they first entered the military.

The shelter isn't the only part of the project. He also has plans to build a convenience store, RV storage facilities, a fuel station and an office. Those will all help fund the shelter, along with grants and donations since it will be a non-profit.

Ver Bryck said getting eight yes votes in Friday's Site Plan and Architectural meeting was surreal, and now he can't wait to get to work.

"I'm overwhelmed with happiness," Ver Bryck said.

He hopes to start construction later this year and have the shelter completed by next Summer.
