Replace VA Campus

The City of Knoxville unveiled plans for the Veterans Administration Campus on Wednesday.

The City of Knoxville and Marion County have bought the property. The plan will be demolish all but the two oldest buildings on the property. Those properties will be auctioned off.

The city plans to name the site “Veterans District.” Mayor Brian Hatch says all specifics have not been worked out.

The campus originates back to the 1890s and closed as a Veterans Administration facility just over 10 years ago.

Marion Board of Supervisors Chair Mark Raymie said it’s probably the biggest infrastructure project the county’s ever taken on.

The city wanted to take over the property and its 39 buildings years ago.It feared ownership might be too costly if it was required to preserve any of the buildings as an historical place.
