President Trump to issue executive order requesting mental health coverage for a 12 month period for all service members as they leave the military, administration officials say in briefing.

  • Executive order aimed at preventing Veteran suicides, Dept. of Veterans Affairs Sec. David Shulkin says on call
  • "Unacceptable number" of 20 suicides a day, Shulkin says
  • Order to provide mental health coverage for "all transitioning service members" effective 60 days from signing of order, Shulkin says
  • Preliminary cost estimates project effort will total couple hundred million dollars a year, depending on how many people use it, official says on condition of anonymity
  • Veterans will be automatically enrolled in mental health coverage, with ability to opt out
  • About 260k service members/year leave military
