VA Updates Disability Rating Schedule to Better Align with Modern Medicine

WASHINGTON — Effective May 13, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will update portions of the VA">Schedule for Rating Disabilities (VASRD, or rating schedule) that evaluates the organs of special sense eye conditions, as well as gynecological conditions and disorders of the breast.

The Comparative Health Assessment Interview (CHAI) research study will help VA understand the effects of military service, deployment, and combat on the health and well-being of Veterans who served during Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), and Operation New Dawn (OND). Researchers are looking at the physical and mental health, vocation or occupation, and social relationships of deployed Veterans, non-deployed Veterans, and similar civilians.

With a commitment to ensure Veterans receive quicker access to specialty rehabilitation services and equipment, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) recently implemented a rapid response team to expand staffing and training, increase communication directly with Veterans and improve processes to reduce and eliminate the backlog of pending requests for prosthetic items and services.
