President Biden signed legislation Monday to award the only all-Black, all-female unit deployed to Europe during World War II the Congressional Gold Medal.
“It never occurred to me that it would happen,” retired U.S. Army Maj. Fannie McClendon, a 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion Veteran, said in a press release.
Known as the Six Triple Eight, the unit made history as the only all-Black and all-female battalion sent overseas during the war to address a multimillion-letter backlog of mail for U.S. troops.
