HR 4949 and S 692, the Hello Girls Congressional Gold Medal Act of 2021, will award a Congressional Gold Medal to the female telephone operators of the Army Signal Corps, known as the "Hello Girls". General of the Army, John J. Perching, called the "Hello Girls" an important part of the military effort in the First World War. They expedited communications throughout the theater of combat saving countless lives. The chief signal officer for the First Army stated in his official report, "a large part of the success of the communications of this Army is due to a competent staff of women operators". Yet these brave women were cut off from Veterans benefits and bonuses. Although they served with the American Expeditionary Force, they were not provided the recognition nor the benefits of other Veterans. This gold medal will finally recognize their important service.
